KANPUR, INDIA – Thousands of devotees flocked to churches across Kanpur on Christmas Eve, filling the city’s numerous places of worship with hymns, prayers, and festive cheer. From Memorial Church and Methodist Church to St. Xavier’s, St. Catherine’s, and All Souls Church, hundreds gathered for midnight mass. The joyous occasion was marked by carol singing, the ringing of church bells at midnight, and the celebratory singing of hymns praising the birth of Jesus Christ.
Churches were illuminated with colorful lights, and congregations enthusiastically participated in traditional Christmas carols. The midnight mass services included readings from the Bible, focusing on the birth of Jesus and his sacrifice for humanity. Young people added to the festive atmosphere with musical performances using violins and drums.
Priests at various churches, including St. Xavier’s Church in Ashok Nagar, delivered sermons emphasizing the significance of Jesus’s birth and his ultimate sacrifice. The message of God’s love for humanity was central to the evening’s services.
