NAMAKKAL, Tamil Nadu – Four men have been arrested in connection with the murder of two migrant workers from Mumbai, police announced Monday. The arrests conclude a 10-month investigation into the deaths of Kiran, 25, and Ranjithkumar, 39, who were working in Namakkal district.
Kiran’s body was discovered buried on a farm in February. Further investigation revealed Ranjithkumar had also succumbed to injuries sustained in the same incident. Police traced the suspects – Maurthi Tanke, an alleged agent who had brought the workers from Mumbai; former sugarcane inspector Uddhav, 28; Vijay, 26; and lorry driver Dhanasekar, 28 – after receiving a tip-off about Tanke’s presence at a local sugar mill.
Confessions revealed that a dispute over wages led to a brutal attack on Kiran and Ranjithkumar with wooden logs. Kiran died at the scene and was buried, while Ranjithkumar died later in hospital. All four suspects have been remanded to prison.
