**Belagavi, Karnataka – December 24, 2024** – The Karnataka government is gearing up for a two-day celebration commemorating the centenary of the 1924 Indian National Congress session held in Belagavi. The events, scheduled for December 26th and 27th, will feature the unveiling of several statues and the inauguration of a memorial hall.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will unveil a Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Veera Soudha on December 26th, the original venue of the 1924 session. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar will inaugurate a refurbished photo gallery showcasing rare images of Gandhiji at the session. A statue of Congress leader Gangadharrao Deshpande, instrumental in organizing the 1924 session, will also be unveiled on the 26th, alongside the inauguration of a memorial hall in his honour.
On December 27th, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge will unveil another Mahatma Gandhi statue in front of the Suvarna Soudha, with the presence of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. A large public rally organized by the Congress party will also take place on this day at the CPEd grounds.
The celebrations will include a Congress Working Committee meeting on December 26th at the Veera Soudha, and numerous dignitaries from across the political spectrum have been invited, including MPs, MLAs, and leaders from various opposition parties. The events aim to honour the historical significance of the 1924 Congress session and its contribution to India’s freedom struggle. Preparations for the events were reviewed by Deputy CM Shivakumar, AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, and other ministers on December 23rd.
