**New Delhi, December 24, 2024** – The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought a response from the Delhi Police regarding a bail plea filed by former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain. Hussain is an accused in the murder of Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.
Hussain’s plea challenges a trial court’s December 3rd rejection of his bail application. His lawyer argues that the trial has begun, with 20 of 114 prosecution witnesses examined, and that his four years and nine months of incarceration warrant bail, especially considering that co-accused have already been granted bail by the High Court. The plea also highlights the lengthy trial process.
The prosecution alleges that Hussain was part of a violent mob responsible for Sharma’s murder. Sharma’s body, bearing 51 injuries, was found in a drain. The riots, sparked by clashes between supporters and protesters of the Citizenship Amendment Act, resulted in at least 53 deaths and numerous injuries. The High Court’s response to Hussain’s bail plea is awaited.
