Mon Dec 23 18:12:13 UTC 2024: **Kannur River Revival Project to be Inaugurated**
KANNUR, KERALA – The first phase of the Kanampuzha River Revival Project in Kannur will be inaugurated on December 26th by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The ₹6.4 crore project, part of the Kannur Corporation’s ‘Kannur Kalathinopam’ initiative and the Green Kerala Project, has restored a 10km stretch of the river, significantly improving irrigation and boosting tourism.
Funding came from the Irrigation Department (₹4.4 crore) and the Kannur Mandal MLA’s Asset Development Fund (₹2 crore). The restoration work, between Cheep Bridge and Mandenvayal, involved constructing new barriers, adding shutters to existing ones, and clearing encroachments and pollution. The project has increased paddy cultivation, raised water levels in over 250 wells, and revived fallow lands.
Minister for Water Resources Roshi Augustine will launch the second phase of the renovation work, with Minister for Registration, Museums, Archaeology and Archives Ramachandran Kadannappally presiding. Pre-inauguration events include a children’s drawing camp, seminars, and an exhibition. The revitalized river, originating from Ayyappanmala and flowing into the Arabian Sea, now features new public footpaths.
