Mon Dec 23 10:23:24 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh Launches Probe into $5 Billion Rooppur Nuclear Plant Scandal
**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh has launched an investigation into the $12.65 billion Rooppur nuclear power plant, alleging $5 billion in financial irregularities. The probe implicates ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, and niece Tulip Siddiq, a UK Labour MP, who are accused of embezzling funds through offshore accounts.
The ACC statement alleges that Siddiq, along with family members, was involved in a money laundering scheme through companies named Prochchaya and Destiny Group, allegedly laundering $900 million. These allegations follow a UK report questioning Siddiq about the alleged siphoning of £3.9 billion from the project. Her mother, Sheikh Rehana, sister of the ousted Prime Minister, was reportedly evacuated to India following the fall of the Awami League government.
The Rooppur plant, a major project under construction with Russian assistance, has been under scrutiny due to Western sanctions against Russia. Despite these concerns, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Russia’s commitment to complete the project on schedule during a visit in September 2023. The project, initiated in 2011, involves a tripartite agreement between Russia, Bangladesh, and India, with Indian nuclear players assisting in construction. The first unit is expected to be completed in 2025, with a planned capacity of 2400 megawatts. The ACC investigation promises to shed light on significant allegations of corruption in this major international project.
