NEW DELHI – Christmas Day, celebrated annually on December 25th, is a major Christian holiday that has gained widespread popularity across various faiths. While the day is marked by church services, festive decorations, gift-giving, and family gatherings, the origins of the date and the name “Christmas” itself remain a subject of discussion.
Two main theories exist. The first posits that December 25th marks the birth of Jesus Christ, with “Christmas” deriving from “Christ.” This narrative involves prophecies surrounding Mary’s pregnancy and Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, attracting shepherds and heralding his arrival as a savior.
However, some historians suggest that Christmas evolved from the Roman festival of Saturnalia, predating the celebration of Jesus’ birth. While a Roman bishop officially recognized the holiday in 137 AD, it wasn’t until 350 AD that Roman priest Julius declared December 25th as Christmas Day.
Regardless of its origins, Christmas 2024 will be observed globally with traditional festivities.
