**Chennai, December 21, 2024** – Construction of a new museum in Gangaikondacholapuram, near the Arulmigu Peruvudaiyar temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Ariyalur district, is set to begin by mid-January 2025. The ₹22.10 crore project, a joint initiative of several Tamil Nadu government departments, will commemorate the legacy of the Chola dynasty.
Spread across 4.14 hectares and located within 150 meters of the temple, the museum will feature a unique architectural design inspired by Chola temple styles. The 25,017 sq. ft. building will boast display halls on both floors, showcasing artifacts unearthed from Maligaimedu and Gangaikonda Cholapuram. A central dome and a large statue of King Rajendra Chola will be prominent features.
The museum’s exhibits will focus on the Chola dynasty’s achievements, including their construction techniques, maritime culture, and weaponry. Further amenities, such as an amphitheatre, parking, and a tourist center, are planned for a future phase. The project, designed by Karvin design consultants, is expected to be completed within 18 months.
