Fri Dec 20 18:00:59 UTC 2024: ## Lakshadweep Jetty Project Delayed, Deemed ‘Deferred’

**Mangalore, Karnataka – December 20, 2024** – A ₹65 crore jetty project aimed at improving maritime connectivity between Lakshadweep and Mangalore Port has been stalled. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the project, part of the Sagarmala scheme, has been placed in the “deemed deferred category” due to a lack of progress after 18 months of initial approval.

The project, which includes infrastructure for a cargo and cruise terminal, received administrative approval and funding sanction in July 2022. However, the lack of subsequent action triggered the deferral according to Sagarmala guidelines.

The announcement came in response to a Lok Sabha question from MP Captain Brijesh Chowta, who sought details on enhancing maritime connectivity between Lakshadweep and Mangalore. Chowta highlighted the potential economic, social, health, and tourism benefits of improved transport links.

While the Ministry provides financial assistance for such projects under the Sagarmala scheme, Sonowal clarified that non-major ports fall under the administrative control of respective state governments. The Minister emphasized the significant potential of improved maritime connectivity for the region.
