JAIPUR, INDIA—December 21, 2024—The death toll from a massive fire caused by a gas tanker collision on the Jaipur-Ajmer Highway has risen to 14, with three more victims succumbing to their injuries today. The accident, which occurred Friday morning, involved a tanker making a U-turn that collided with an oncoming truck, igniting a blaze that spread across 300 meters, engulfing over 37 vehicles.

Five of the deceased remain unidentified due to severe burns. Twenty-six injured individuals are currently hospitalized at Sawai Man Singh Government Hospital (SMSGH), with 14 suffering over 50% burns. The highway was reopened Friday night after the wreckage was cleared.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has ordered an investigation into accident-prone areas along state roads. Congress leader Sachin Pilot has also called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.

The Rajasthan High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident, issuing notices to the Chief Secretary and the Union government demanding an investigation into potential negligence. The court also ordered adequate compensation for victims and those who lost property. The case will be heard on January 10, 2025.
