SIRSA, Haryana—Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala passed away on Friday at the age of 89, prompting a three-day state mourning and a public holiday in the state on Saturday. Chautala, a five-time chief minister and leader of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), was cremated with full state honours on Saturday in his native Sirsa district.

Thousands gathered in Teja Khera village to pay their respects as Chautala’s body, draped in the Indian flag, lay in state at the family farmhouse before the cremation ceremony. The funeral was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and leaders from various political parties, reflecting Chautala’s significant political influence.

Dhankhar, who spoke at the ceremony, praised Chautala’s dedication to farmers and rural development, highlighting his outspoken nature and commitment to improving the lives of villagers.
