**KOCHI, KERALA –** The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) is finalizing data on sewage pollution in the Edappally and Perandoor canals, fulfilling a directive from the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The data, compiled as part of a feasibility study by the CSIR-NEERI, will inform the development of a solution to address the significant fecal contamination identified in a 2021 *The Hindu* report.

The NGT, which took suo motu cognizance of the report, issued an order in August 2024 demanding an immediate solution to the longstanding problem. NEERI researchers recently conducted site visits, gathering information on pollution sources, catchment areas, and drainage systems. The PCB has requested data from the Department of Irrigation and the Kochi Corporation to complete the study. NEERI has also suggested the identification of suitable land for a modular sewage treatment system. The final report is expected to be submitted shortly.
