Fri Dec 20 20:17:45 UTC 2024: ## Faecal Contamination Found in Drinking Water Supplied by Private Distributor in Kerala

**Kannur, Kerala –** A joint inspection by the Kerala Health Department and Taliparamba municipality has uncovered faecal contamination in drinking water supplied by a private distributor, Jafar Drinking Water Supply, in Kannur. Samples tested at the Kerala Water Authority’s laboratory confirmed the presence of E. coli bacteria, indicating contamination with human faeces. This prompted authorities to seize the distributor’s water tanker and goods auto.

The contaminated water was sourced from a well in Chavanapuzha. While the supplier provided a water quality report claiming purity, inspectors found inconsistencies and ordered the distributor to improve water purification and chlorination processes. The presence of E. coli highlights significant lapses in these processes.

The investigation revealed that many establishments in Taliparamba rely on private water suppliers to reduce costs. The Health Department’s intervention follows concerns about a potential jaundice outbreak. Authorities are emphasizing the critical need for proper water purification and safe drinking water practices.
