Sat Dec 21 13:30:00 UTC 2024: ## DOJ Watchdog Report Debunks Jan. 6 FBI Conspiracy Theories

**Washington, D.C.** – A Justice Department Inspector General report released Thursday debunked conspiracy theories alleging widespread FBI involvement in the January 6th Capitol attack. The nearly 90-page report, following a four-year investigation by Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz, found that while over two dozen FBI informants were present in Washington D.C. that day, none were deployed to incite violence or break the law. The report explicitly stated that the bureau did not place undercover agents within the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol.

While acknowledging the presence of informants gathering intelligence, the report criticized FBI leadership for failing to adequately assess and address the potential for violence leading up to January 6th. Horowitz specifically condemned the bureau’s failure to fully utilize its intelligence resources and follow through on promises to gather intelligence from field offices after the 2020 election. He suggested that better leveraging these resources could have mitigated the violence.

The FBI responded to the report, acknowledging shortcomings and stating they have addressed them, while simultaneously disputing certain factual claims within the report. The investigation found that only a small number of the informants were actively collecting information on January 6th itself.
