Fri Dec 20 23:57:22 UTC 2024: ## “Monster of Mazan” Convicted in Shocking Rape Case, Further Investigations Underway
**Mazan, France** – Dominique Pelicot, dubbed the “Monster of Mazan,” has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the drugging and rape of his wife, Gisèle Pelicot. The case, which involved the conviction of 51 men for related offenses, has sent shockwaves across France and internationally. The sentencing follows the discovery of over 20,000 images and videos documenting the abuse of Gisèle Pelicot.
The sheer scale of Pelicot’s crimes extends far beyond his wife. Police investigations uncovered evidence suggesting the abuse of his daughter, Caroline Darian, who testified in court that she believes she was also assaulted by her father, although there is no corroborating video evidence. Further, indecent images of his daughters-in-law were also found.
The investigation has also unearthed potential links to two cold cases: the 1991 rape and murder of estate agent Sophie Narme, and the 1999 attempted rape of another estate agent, Estella B. Pelicot’s DNA matched evidence from the 1999 attempted rape, leading to his admission, though he denies involvement in Narme’s murder. He is currently under investigation for both.
The trial has been hailed as a victory for Gisèle Pelicot, whose courage in coming forward has been praised by French President Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders. Despite the significant media attention, Ms. Pelicot’s lawyer stated that she wishes to avoid being seen as an icon and simply wants to live a normal life.
However, the legal battle may not be over. Two men convicted of raping Gisèle Pelicot have already appealed their convictions, arguing they were misled by Pelicot and that the court was unduly influenced by media pressure. Pelicot’s lawyer has also indicated an appeal is being considered. Gisèle Pelicot, while relieved by the verdict, has expressed willingness to face any further trials if necessary. The case continues to highlight the pervasive nature of sexual violence and the importance of supporting survivors.
