Fri Dec 20 19:32:07 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Air Quality Remains “Severe” Despite Marginal Improvement

**New Delhi, December 21, 2024** – Delhi’s air quality, while showing a slight improvement on Friday, remained in the “severe” category for the fifth consecutive day, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) registered 429, down from 451 the previous day, but still exceeding the World Health Organization’s limit by over 17 times.

The CPCB warned that such high pollution levels negatively impact healthy individuals and severely affect those with pre-existing health conditions. The Centre’s Air Quality Early Warning System predicts a further slight improvement on Saturday.

The winter spike in air pollution across Delhi and northern India is attributed to meteorological factors like reduced wind speeds and lower temperatures, combined with agricultural stubble burning. Anti-smog guns were deployed in an attempt to mitigate the pollution.
