**CHENNAI, December 21, 2024** – A dispute has arisen in Tamil Nadu over the ownership of an iPhone retrieved from the hundial (donation box) of the Arulmigu Kandaswamy temple in Thiruporur. According to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Act, any item deposited in a temple hundial belongs to the deity.
The iPhone, belonging to Dinesh of Ambattur, reportedly fell into the hundial on August 18th. Dinesh later requested its return, citing important data on the device. The hundial was opened on December 19th, and Dinesh was informed.
However, temple authorities reportedly stated that Dinesh could retrieve his data after submitting a letter proving ownership and potentially paying a fine. Dinesh declined to comment further.
Minister P. K. Sekarbabu stated the department will adhere to legal procedures. A retired HR&CE official suggested police intervention, proposing options such as a small fine for return or a public auction. The situation highlights the legal complexities surrounding items found in temple donation boxes.
