**Mumbai, India –** Prithvi Shaw’s exclusion from the Mumbai Vijay Hazare Trophy squad has sparked controversy, with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) directly attributing the decision to the batsman’s persistent disciplinary issues and poor fitness. While Shaw publicly expressed his disappointment on social media, the MCA has countered, citing repeated instances of unprofessional behavior.
A senior MCA official, speaking to PTI on condition of anonymity, revealed that Shaw’s fitness and attitude problems were so significant that the team was forced to strategically position him during matches to minimize his impact on the field. “In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, we were playing with 10 fielders as we were forced to hide Prithvi Shaw,” the official stated, adding that Shaw’s poor fitness was evident even while batting.
The official detailed Shaw’s erratic behavior during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, including frequent missed training sessions following late nights. These issues, the official stressed, extended beyond the recent tournament, noting that even senior teammates have voiced concerns. Furthermore, the MCA confirmed Shaw failed to adhere to a previously assigned fitness program.
Captain Shreyas Iyer also commented on Shaw’s performance and work ethic, emphasizing the need for improved professionalism while acknowledging Shaw’s past successes. “He needs to get his work ethics right,” Iyer stated. “We can’t babysit anyone.”
The MCA official firmly rejected the notion that Shaw’s social media complaints would influence selection decisions, stating, “No one is Shaw’s enemy. He is his own enemy.” This sentiment reflects a broader frustration within the Indian cricket community over Shaw’s failure to live up to his early potential. Despite a promising debut in 2018, his international career has stagnated, further underscored by his absence from the recent IPL auction.
