Fri Dec 20 03:54:03 UTC 2024: ## Parliament Expands Committee Scrutinizing “One Nation, One Election” Bills

**New Delhi, December 20, 2024** – The Indian government has expanded the parliamentary joint committee reviewing the proposed “One Nation, One Election” bills. The committee’s size has increased from 31 to 39 members, broadening its representation across various political parties.

The expansion includes the addition of one member each from the Shiv Sena (UBT), CPI(M), and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), along with two more BJP members and an additional member from the Samajwadi Party. The committee will now comprise 27 Lok Sabha members and 12 Rajya Sabha members. Notable additions to the Lok Sabha contingent include Baijayant Panda and Sanjay Jaiswal (BJP), Chhotelal (SP), Anil Desai (Shiv Sena UBT), Shambhavi (LJP), and K Radhakrishnan (CPI-M). The committee will examine two bills: one proposing constitutional amendments and another related to the implementation of simultaneous elections. The move follows criticism that the initial composition lacked sufficient representation.
