**BERWYN, IL – December 20, 2024** – A 24-year-old man suspected in the fatal shooting of three people in Mahomet, Illinois, was killed by police in a shootout in Berwyn late Wednesday night.
John Lyons of Westchester was identified as the suspect in the triple homicide that occurred around 9:40 PM Wednesday in Mahomet, approximately 190 kilometers southwest of Chicago. The victims were identified as Sara E. Mason (26), Janis Mason (61), and Caleb Mason (23). Sara Mason was pronounced dead at the scene, while Janis and Caleb Mason died at a nearby hospital. A vigil was held for the victims Thursday evening.
Berwyn police responded to a report of a man with a gun around 11:30 PM Wednesday. Lyons fled the scene, breaking into a home where he fatally shot two dogs before running into a nearby yard. He refused police commands to stop and fired upon officers, prompting them to return fire, fatally wounding him.
Investigations into both the Mahomet homicides and the Berwyn shooting are ongoing. Authorities are currently piecing together the events leading up to the shootings. The relationship between Lyons and the victims in Mahomet remains unclear.
