**Mumbai, India** – A tragic boat accident near Mumbai’s Gateway of India on Wednesday resulted in the death of 14 passengers. The incident has sparked serious concerns regarding passenger safety on tourist boats operating from Mumbai to destinations like Elephanta Island, Mandwa, and Alibaug.

Mumbai police reported that rescue teams saved 95 people, while 13 bodies have been identified. The search continues for one missing child. Approximately 110 passengers, including 20 children, were aboard the “Neil Kamal” boat when the accident occurred.

Captain Subhash More of the “Al Mariam” boat, which was nearby, spoke to ETV Bharat about the incident. He revealed that while safety guidelines are provided to passengers, many ignore them, often refusing to wear life jackets, citing concerns about soiling their clothes. Following the accident, life jackets are now being provided and emphasized, but the reluctance of passengers remains a significant challenge. Captain More urged all boat passengers to wear life jackets for safety.

Nine injured passengers were admitted to St. George Hospital following the accident but have since been discharged. Tragically, three members of a single family from Nashik perished in the accident. They had traveled to Mumbai two days prior for the treatment of their five-year-old son who suffered from asthma. The incident underscores the need for stricter safety measures and greater passenger awareness to prevent future tragedies.
