Tue Dec 17 16:40:54 UTC 2024: ## Meghalaya Alerts Centre Over UAV Sightings Near Bangladesh Border

**Shillong, India –** The Meghalaya government has raised concerns with the central government following the recent detection of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including Turkey-made Bayraktar TB2 drones, near the state’s border with Bangladesh. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed the sightings, stating that both the state and central governments are closely monitoring the situation.

The UAVs were spotted near Sohra and Shella in East Khasi Hills district, approximately 200 meters south of the international border. While the exact origin and purpose of the drones remain unclear, the Bayraktar TB2’s capabilities – including intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and potential armed attack missions – have raised security concerns.

The Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indian Air Force have been alerted, and surveillance along the 443km India-Bangladesh border has been intensified. Mr. Tynsong emphasized that Meghalaya is keeping the Centre informed and urged New Delhi to raise the issue with the Bangladeshi government. The incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance along the shared border.
