Tue Dec 17 17:58:03 UTC 2024: ## Tottenham’s Bentancur Ban Upheld After Racist Remark Appeal Fails
**London, England** – Tottenham Hotspur’s appeal to reduce midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match ban for a racist remark has been rejected by the English Football Association (FA). The FA announced its decision Tuesday following a hearing, confirming that the Uruguayan international will serve the full suspension. Reasons for the decision are expected to be published shortly.
Bentancur’s comments, made on a Uruguayan television show in June, targeted South Koreans. When asked for a Tottenham jersey, he jokingly suggested Son Heung-min’s, adding that it could belong to Son’s cousin because “more or less they are all the same.” While Bentancur subsequently apologized to Son, who accepted the apology, the FA’s independent regulatory commission deemed the remarks “clearly abusive and insulting.”
The commission acknowledged Bentancur’s explanation that his words were intended as sarcasm and a challenge to the journalist’s use of the term “The Korean,” but ultimately ruled that the context did not excuse the offensive nature of his statement. Despite considering Bentancur’s lack of intent to offend Son or anyone else, the commission upheld the seven-match ban and a £100,000 ($126,000) fine.
The ban means Bentancur will miss crucial upcoming fixtures, including Thursday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United and Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool. He has already served five domestic matches of the suspension.
