Tue Dec 17 18:12:34 UTC 2024: ## Rajya Sabha Opposition Slams BJP’s Handling of Constitution’s 75th Anniversary
**New Delhi, December 18, 2024** – The Rajya Sabha witnessed heated exchanges yesterday as the Opposition vehemently criticized the BJP-led government’s approach to the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. Accusations of undermining constitutional principles and neglecting crucial issues dominated the debate.
Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain launched a sharp attack, questioning the BJP’s apparent aversion to socialism and its implications for social justice and welfare programs. He linked the calls to remove “socialism” from the Preamble to a regressive “Manuvadi” mindset. The criticism extended to the government’s alleged failure to investigate the Rafale scam and the Adani issue.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien described the Constitution as a living document, criticizing the government’s handling of federalism, media freedom, and the role of the opposition. He cited instances where state bills were stalled and the opposition’s voice suppressed in Parliament.
Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Sanjay Raut pointed out that the BJP’s projected electoral dominance should have led to discussions on constitutional amendments, not a mere celebratory debate. Other opposition members echoed these concerns, highlighting the BJP’s alleged divisive rhetoric and the government’s inaction on issues like the Manipur violence.
CPI(M)’s John Brittas sarcastically suggested the formation of a “Jawaharlal Nehru Ministry” to shoulder the blame for administrative failures, while RJD’s Manoj Kumar Jha emphasized Nehru’s contribution to the nation’s foundational structures. The opposition’s unified stance underscored their discontent with the government’s handling of the Constitution’s anniversary and broader governance issues.
