Mon Dec 16 20:19:00 UTC 2024: ## Archbishop of York Faces Calls to Resign Amidst Sexual Misconduct Handling Accusations

**London, December 17, 2024** – The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, is facing intense pressure to resign after allegations surfaced regarding his handling of a priest accused of sexual misconduct. The BBC reported that while Bishop of Chelmsford, Cottrell allowed a priest, David Tudor, to remain in his post despite knowing Tudor had been barred from being alone with children and had paid compensation to an accuser.

Cottrell, who is set to temporarily lead the Church of England next month following Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby’s resignation, defended his actions, stating he suspended Tudor as soon as a new victim came forward in 2019. He claimed there were no legal grounds for earlier action. Tudor was eventually dismissed from the church in October after admitting to sexual relationships with underage girls in the 1980s.

However, Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley expressed strong criticism, stating Cottrell lacks the credibility to lead the church through necessary reforms. She argued the evidence renders him unfit for the position.

This latest controversy follows the resignation of Archbishop Welby last month due to his handling of separate sexual abuse claims. The allegations against Cottrell are expected to fuel further soul-searching within the Church of England, which is already grappling with internal divisions over issues such as gay rights and the role of women. Cottrell’s temporary appointment is now highly uncertain.
