**Beijing, China** – India and China are set to hold high-level talks on their long-standing border dispute, signaling a significant thaw in relations after years of tension. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday, December 20, for the 23rd meeting of Special Representatives on the boundary question. This marks the first such meeting in five years, the last having been held in New Delhi in 2019.
The renewed engagement follows a recent disengagement of troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in October, ending a four-year standoff that began after deadly clashes in the Galwan Valley in 2020. Both countries have expressed a renewed commitment to resolving the border issue, which has been a major point of contention due to differing interpretations of the LAC’s demarcation. The nearly 4,000 km long boundary, historically between India and Tibet, runs through challenging Himalayan terrain and lacks clear markers.
The upcoming meeting is considered a crucial step towards de-escalation and a potential path towards lasting peace in the region. Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping have previously emphasized the importance of finding a solution for effective border management. While New Delhi has yet to officially confirm the meeting, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has announced it publicly. The talks aim to address the complex boundary issues and find a mutually acceptable solution to the long-standing dispute.
