Tue Dec 17 10:00:00 UTC 2024: ## One Nation, One Election Bill Introduced in Lok Sabha Amidst Opposition
**New Delhi:** The Indian Parliament saw the introduction of the “One Nation, One Election” bill on Tuesday, sparking immediate controversy. The bill, along with the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill, aims to synchronize the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the legislation, but it faced strong opposition from several parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Trinamool Congress. Conversely, NDA allies expressed full support.
A vote was held on the motion to introduce the bill, utilizing a hybrid electronic and ballot system. The motion passed with 269 MPs voting in favor and 198 against. Following this, the bill was officially introduced.
Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP and Union Minister, P. Chandrasekhar, voiced unconditional support for the bill, citing potential cost savings, increased efficiency, and improved voter turnout as key benefits. He argued that the continuous election cycle hinders development. The bill’s passage marks a significant step towards a potentially unified election process in India, though significant opposition remains.
