Tue Dec 17 02:50:00 UTC 2024: ## New Zealand Dominate Third Test, Set England Mammoth Target

Hamilton, New Zealand – Kane Williamson’s magnificent 156 powered New Zealand to a commanding position in the third Test against England, setting the tourists a daunting 658-run target. The Black Caps ended day three with England’s openers back in the pavilion, leaving the visitors facing an almost insurmountable task.

Williamson anchored New Zealand’s innings, forming crucial partnerships with Rachin Ravindra (44) and Daryl Mitchell (60) as the lead ballooned past 500. His 33rd Test century, his seventh at Seddon Park – including a remarkable five in a row at the venue – included a six to reach the milestone. Ravindra provided valuable support before falling for 44, but Mitchell continued the onslaught, hitting a half-century before eventually falling to Jacob Bethell’s maiden Test wicket. Mitchell Santner contributed a rapid 49 down the order before Tim Southee, playing his final Test, received a guard of honour before he and Matt Henry were dismissed by Bethell.

England’s woes were compounded by the absence of captain Ben Stokes, who left the field injured, clutching his left hamstring. This hampered their bowling attack and allowed New Zealand to dominate the batting session. Despite England employing defensive field settings, Mitchell and others found gaps to score aggressively.

The innings concluded with New Zealand posting a total of 453, adding to their first innings score of 347, against England’s 143 and 18/2. England’s opening batsmen, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, both fell cheaply before stumps. Duckett was dismissed by Tim Southee, while Crawley was trapped lbw by Matt Henry, leaving England with a mountain to climb on day four. The series is in danger of becoming a New Zealand whitewash.
