**Kalaburagi, Karnataka, December 17, 2024** – A newborn baby spent hours exposed to the elements outside Kalaburagi’s District Hospital after his mother died, sparking outrage and prompting an investigation.
The mother, Bhagyashree Shivaji, delivered the baby at a government health facility in Afzalpur earlier that day. Transported to the District Hospital in Kalaburagi due to post-partum complications, she tragically succumbed to excessive bleeding. Hospital staff then allegedly dismissed the healthy newborn, instructing the grandmother to take the infant home without offering any medical assistance or guidance.
The grandmother was left with no option but to sit in the open, her sari shielding the vulnerable baby from the elements. Only after concerned onlookers alerted media personnel and the matter was brought to the attention of the District Surgeon and District Health and Family Welfare Officer, was the baby finally admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Hospital authorities initially claimed the family had refused medical care for the infant, a claim disputed by the grandmother. The District Health and Family Welfare Officer has promised to take disciplinary action against the hospital staff for their insensitive handling of the situation and the delay in admitting the child. The incident has highlighted serious concerns about the quality of care provided at the government facility.
