Tue Dec 17 13:29:01 UTC 2024: ## Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland Resigns Amidst Budget Disagreements

**OTTAWA** – In a surprise move, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned from her post on Monday. In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, posted on X (formerly Twitter), Freeland cited irreconcilable differences over the best path forward for Canada’s economy.

The resignation came just hours before Freeland was scheduled to present economic projections to Parliament, which were reportedly expected to show a significant increase in the government’s deficit for the 2023-24 fiscal year, exceeding planned projections.

Freeland’s letter stated that she and Trudeau had been at odds for several weeks regarding the country’s economic direction. Canadian media reports suggest disagreements centered around proposed government spending and temporary tax breaks. Freeland revealed in her letter that Trudeau had informed her on Friday that he did not wish for her to continue as Finance Minister and offered her another cabinet position. Ultimately, she concluded that resignation was the most appropriate course of action.

Trudeau’s office has yet to release an official statement. Speculation points to Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and currently Trudeau’s economic advisor, as a potential replacement. However, as Carney is not a Member of Parliament, he would need to win a seat in the House of Commons before assuming the role. The unexpected resignation leaves Canada’s economic policy in a state of flux.
