Sun Dec 15 15:26:23 UTC 2024: ## Attorney General Calls for New Social Media Law in India

**Mangaluru, Karnataka, December 15, 2024** – Attorney General R. Venkataramani has urged for the creation of a new legal framework to govern social media in India. Speaking at the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Shri Dharmasthala Majunatheshwara Law College in Mangaluru on Sunday, he highlighted the pervasive influence of social media on public discourse and the urgent need to address its potential for misuse.

Venkataramani emphasized the increasing blurring of lines between private and public spheres due to social media, stating that “every matter of human interaction…is up for grabs in the public domain.” He argued that existing regulatory mechanisms are insufficient to manage the rapid evolution and widespread impact of social media.

The Attorney General also discussed the broader implications of technology on fundamental rights, particularly the right to equality. He questioned how the legal system will navigate the challenges posed by technology’s rapidly expanding role in society, and proposed a new ethical lens for legal practices. He coined the term “Dharma of rights,” emphasizing the importance of considering ethical implications and individual responsibility in legal and social matters. He used the ongoing debates surrounding reservation quotas as an example of the need to address ethical considerations within the existing legal framework.

The event also featured addresses from former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court Antony Dominic, former Karnataka High Court Judge Michael D’Cunha, and D. Veerendra Heggade, Pattadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala. Venkataramani’s call for a new social media law underscores a growing concern about the need for updated legal frameworks to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital age.
