During a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday, former Maoists from Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha detailed how senior leaders enforced the procedure, viewing children as a potential distraction and threat to the movement’s loyalty.
One former insurgent from Telangana described undergoing a vasectomy while a member of the CPI (Maoist), only to reverse the procedure after surrendering and subsequently becoming a father. Markam Dula, a surrendered Maoist from Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, stated that the procedure is mandatory, with leaders aiming to prevent emotional attachments that could weaken the movement. Home Minister Shah expressed satisfaction at the surrendered Maoists’ decision to renounce violence and assured them of government support for their rehabilitation. He appealed to remaining insurgents to lay down their arms, emphasizing the government’s commitment to their reintegration into society. Shah highlighted the various government schemes providing employment opportunities and financial assistance to former Maoists.
