Sun Dec 15 20:47:31 UTC 2024: ## ECOWAS Grants Six-Month Reprieve to Departing Sahel Nations

**Abuja, Nigeria** – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has granted Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger a six-month grace period before their official departure from the bloc, delaying the exit date from January 29th to July 29th. This decision, announced following a weekend summit in Abuja, represents a last-ditch attempt to persuade the three Sahel nations to reconsider their withdrawal, a move they have declared “irreversible.”

While the January 29th date remains the official withdrawal date, the extended deadline offers a window for further negotiations. ECOWAS hopes to leverage this time to convince the countries to remain within the regional body. Despite the impending departure, the three nations have eased concerns about free movement and trade by vowing to maintain visa-free access for all ECOWAS citizens.

The decision comes amidst a period of significant political upheaval in the Sahel region. The three countries, facing ongoing security challenges from groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS, have increasingly aligned themselves with Russia, distancing themselves from former colonial power France and other Western allies. They have also formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, appointed mediator in July, expressed optimism about ongoing talks, emphasizing the importance of maintaining relations despite the security concerns. The withdrawal of these three nations would represent a significant blow to ECOWAS, impacting both regional stability and economic integration.
