Sun Dec 15 22:48:00 UTC 2024: ## Britain Pledges £50 Million in Aid for Syria After Assad’s Fall

**London, December 16, 2024** – The United Kingdom announced a £50 million ($63 million) aid package on Sunday to assist vulnerable Syrians following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad by rebel forces last week. The funding aims to address the urgent humanitarian needs of millions affected by over a decade of civil war.

The aid package will allocate £30 million to provide immediate assistance to over one million people, focusing on food, shelter, emergency healthcare, and protection for the most vulnerable. This funding, primarily channeled through the United Nations, will also support the rehabilitation of essential services, including water, hospitals, and schools. An additional £10 million will be directed to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Lebanon and another £10 million to Jordan, working through the WFP and the UN Refugee Agency, to aid Syrian refugees in neighboring countries.

Foreign Minister David Lammy hailed the fall of the Assad regime as a “once-in-a-generation chance” for the Syrian people, emphasizing Britain’s commitment to supporting them as they rebuild their nation. The conflict has devastated Syria’s infrastructure and displaced a significant portion of its population, creating a dire humanitarian crisis. The UK aid package aims to alleviate some of the immediate suffering and contribute to the long-term recovery process.
