Sun Dec 15 12:41:39 UTC 2024: ## Madurai Residents Face Flooding, Noise, and Market Chaos

**Madurai, December 15, 2024** – Residents of several Madurai neighborhoods are facing a range of persistent issues, including severe flooding, unchecked noise pollution, and chaotic market conditions, according to letters published in *The Hindu*.

Residents of Duraisamy Nagar, Velmurugan Nagar, Vanamamalai Nagar, Namachivaya Nagar, and Thai Mugambigai Nagar along Bypass Road are enduring chronic flooding, with even light rain causing three-foot-deep water to accumulate at the sole entrance to their area. Despite paying hefty property taxes in a Corporation Grade ‘A’ area, this problem has persisted for over a decade. Residents are urging Madurai Collector intervention for a permanent solution.

Separately, concerns were raised regarding the unregulated roadside businesses near Keezhakuyilkudi Vilakku bus stop in Nagamalai Pudukottai. Vendors selling fish, chicken, and meat, along with the unsanitary practice of roadside animal slaughter, are causing traffic congestion and posing health risks. The Highways Department and local panchayat are being called upon to address these issues.

The letters also highlighted widespread noise pollution. Despite Supreme Court directives, enforcement of noise control measures remains lax. Loudspeakers used during religious services and public functions, including the use of banned cone speakers, are causing significant distress, especially to elderly people, students, and the sick. The excessive noise from firecrackers compounds the problem. The government is urged to ensure residents’ peace and well-being.

Finally, the congested conditions in Madurai’s East and South Marret Streets were criticized. The location of onion and vegetable markets on roads and platforms causes traffic gridlock, exacerbated by inadequate waste disposal leading to unsanitary conditions and further traffic disruptions. Authorities are requested to implement comprehensive measures to alleviate these issues.
