**London, England** – Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou publicly criticized Timo Werner’s performance in their 1-1 Europa League draw against Rangers, replacing the German forward at halftime. Werner, who has scored only one goal in 19 appearances this season, had a particularly poor first half, losing possession 16 times, failing to win any of his five duels, and completing only 69% of his passes.
Postecoglou stated that Werner’s performance was “not acceptable,” particularly given Tottenham’s current injury situation and limited squad depth. He emphasized the need for all players, especially senior members of the team, to perform at a higher level. The manager’s comments came after BBC Sportsound commentator Steven Thompson described Werner’s decision-making as “abysmal.”
Werner’s struggles highlight a disappointing season for the forward, who is on loan from RB Leipzig. His initial loan deal included a £15m purchase option, but that has since been reduced to £8.5m, reflecting his lackluster form. The draw against Rangers leaves Tottenham with just one win in their last eight matches across all competitions. Dejan Kulusevski replaced Werner at halftime and scored the equalizer for Spurs.
