Fri Dec 13 15:57:23 UTC 2024: **One Nation, One Election Bill Sparks Fierce Political Debate**

NEW DELHI – The Indian government’s proposed “One Nation, One Election” bill has ignited a major political firestorm, with the opposition strongly criticizing the plan as an attack on federalism. The bill, approved by the Union Cabinet Thursday and based on recommendations from a committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, aims to synchronize national and state elections, potentially saving time and resources.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the move as a step towards strengthening Indian democracy. However, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi countered that the proposal undermines India’s federal structure and necessitates parliamentary discussion. The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, uniformly opposes the bill. While the BJP-led NDA alliance largely supports it, even within the NDA, some parties like the JD(U) have expressed concerns about the logistical and constitutional complexities involved in implementing simultaneous elections.

Bihar Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary defended the bill, dismissing opposition concerns. Other opposition voices, including Congress MPs Digvijay Singh and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (whose maiden Lok Sabha speech drew both praise and criticism), have questioned the bill’s practicality and potential consequences. The Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister even went so far as to call the plan a conspiracy to weaken regional parties. The debate is expected to intensify as the bill proceeds through Parliament.
