**Singapore, December 12, 2024** – Eighteen-year-old Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh has made history, defeating China’s Ding Liren in the final game of the FIDE World Chess Championship to become the youngest-ever world champion. Gukesh, from Chennai, surpassed the record previously held by Garry Kasparov for nearly four decades.

The decisive victory, achieved after 58 moves, brought Gukesh’s final score to 7.5 points, securing the world title against Ding Liren’s 6.5 points. He is only the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand (who now mentors Gukesh), and the third Asian to claim the prestigious title.

“I was dreaming this moment for the last 10 years. Happy I realized this dream,” Gukesh said following his win.

The final match, held at World Resorts Sentosa, captivated a global audience. Spectators, including families with children aspiring to be chess champions, flocked to witness the historic event. The match showcased intense strategic play, with several draws preceding the final game. While the final game itself was a nail-biter, Gukesh ultimately capitalized on a blunder by Ding Liren to secure his victory. The match’s tension was further heightened by the close time management by both players, with Gukesh consistently maintaining a time advantage.

The championship also highlighted the crucial role of mental conditioning, with the presence of renowned mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton adding another layer of interest to the event.

The win marks a significant moment for Indian chess and underscores Gukesh’s exceptional talent and dedication. His triumph promises to inspire a new generation of chess players.
