**London, England** – A new study published in *Lancet Oncology* reveals a disturbing global trend: bowel cancer rates are climbing among younger adults, with England experiencing one of the sharpest increases. Researchers analyzed data from 50 countries and found that rates rose in 27, with New Zealand, Chile, Puerto Rico, and England showing the most significant annual increases. England saw a 3.6% annual rise, the fourth highest globally.
The study, led by Hyuna Sung of the American Cancer Society, highlights a concerning global phenomenon impacting people aged 25-49. While previous research indicated this rise mainly in high-income Western countries, this study demonstrates the issue spans various economies and regions. In England, young women experienced faster increases than men.
Experts attribute the rise to several lifestyle factors including increased consumption of junk food, high levels of physical inactivity, the obesity epidemic, high processed meat intake, and insufficient fiber in the diet.
Lead author Sung emphasized the need for innovative prevention strategies targeting these dietary and lifestyle factors. He stressed the importance of public awareness regarding early symptoms, such as blood in stool, persistent changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, discomfort, or bloating. The global nature of this trend necessitates a concerted international effort to understand the underlying causes and develop effective prevention measures tailored to younger generations.
