Fri Dec 13 14:10:41 UTC 2024: ## Israel Extends Syrian Troop Deployment Amidst Post-Assad Uncertainty
**JERUSALEM, December 13, 2024** – Israel has announced that its troops will remain stationed on Mount Hermon, a strategic location overlooking Damascus, Syria, throughout the winter. This decision, announced by Defence Minister Israel Katz, follows the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s government and signifies a prolonged Israeli presence in Syria.
The deployment, initially described as a temporary measure to secure Israel’s borders, now appears indefinite. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the troops will remain until a force capable of enforcing the 1973 Arab-Israeli war Separation of Forces Agreement is established. The harsh winter conditions on Mount Hermon necessitate special preparations for an extended stay, according to Mr. Katz.
Israel’s actions have drawn international condemnation. France and the UAE have criticized the incursion as a violation of the agreement, while the United States has voiced support, citing Israel’s self-defense needs.
In addition to the troop deployment into a Syrian buffer zone, Israel has launched hundreds of air and naval strikes this week, targeting and destroying the majority of Syria’s weaponry to prevent it from falling into the hands of hostile forces. While Israel welcomed Assad’s removal, concerns remain about the various rebel groups that replaced his regime, some with ties to organizations such as Al Qaeda. The situation remains fluid and uncertain.
