Mon Dec 09 20:56:50 UTC 2024: ## BJP Accuses Sonia Gandhi of Ties to George Soros, Sparking Political Firestorm

**NEW DELHI** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, alleging close connections between her and Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros. The accusations, dismissed as “dark fantasies” by the Congress, have ignited a major political controversy and drawn in the US State Department.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju described the alleged links as a “serious concern,” emphasizing the need for a non-partisan investigation into potential foreign influence on Indian affairs. The BJP points to Sonia Gandhi’s past roles in organizations with ties to Soros-funded entities, including the Forum of Democratic Leaders in the Asia-Pacific (FDL-AP) and the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. They also highlighted the Congress’s use of material from the Soros-funded Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) in their criticism of the Adani Group. The BJP alleges that this represents a concerted effort by foreign actors to destabilize India and undermine Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress vehemently denies the allegations. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram called the BJP’s claims “conspiracy theories” and rejected any suggestion of foreign interference. Other opposition parties have echoed this sentiment, demanding the BJP focus on governance rather than pursuing unsubstantiated accusations.

The BJP’s accusations have also extended to the US State Department, alleging that the OCCRP, partially funded by the US government, is a tool for destabilizing India. The US embassy has refuted these claims, stating that their funding supports journalistic training and does not influence editorial content. This denial, however, has been dismissed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who insists the US government’s funding of OCCRP proves a coordinated effort to harm India’s economy and defame the Modi government.

The controversy has escalated into a major political battle, with both sides trading accusations and intensifying the already strained relations between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress. The dispute highlights concerns about foreign influence in Indian politics and underscores the ongoing tensions between the two leading parties.
