**Bengaluru, India –** S.M. Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka and a prominent figure in Indian politics, passed away early this morning at the age of 92. He breathed his last at his residence in Bengaluru after a brief illness.
Krishna served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004. His tenure is largely remembered for his contributions to transforming Bengaluru into a global technology hub. Following his time as CM, he served as the Governor of Maharashtra (2004-2008) and later as India’s External Affairs Minister in 2009. His role in shaping India’s foreign policy is also widely acknowledged.
Born in Mandya in 1932, Krishna had a distinguished career in law and politics. He began his political journey in 1962, winning the Maddur Assembly seat as an independent candidate. He later joined the Indian National Congress and subsequently the Bharatiya Janata Party. Throughout his career, he held various positions, including Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Member of Parliament (MP) in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka.
A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan award in 2023, Krishna was also a known tennis enthusiast. His passion for the sport was well-documented.
