Tue Dec 10 02:49:55 UTC 2024: ## Pakistan Recalls Babar Azam, Naseem Shah for South Africa Tour, But Drops Shaheen Afridi

**JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA** – Pakistan has announced its Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa, making a surprising decision to omit star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi while recalling Babar Azam and Naseem Shah. The move follows wholesale changes to the Test team after a loss to England, a shake-up that ultimately resulted in a series win for Pakistan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) cited strategic reasons for Afridi’s exclusion. Aqib Javed, a member of the selection committee and interim white-ball coach, explained that the decision was made to keep Afridi fresh for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The PCB aims to maintain consistent ODI selections in preparation for the tournament while providing opportunities for emerging T20I talent.

Afridi’s absence is notable given his strong performance in previous South African tours. In contrast, Mohammad Abbas has been recalled to the Test squad after a strong showing in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, despite his last Test appearance being in 2021.

The 15-member Test squad is captained by Shan Masood, with Saud Shakeel as vice-captain. The team also includes Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, and a mix of experienced and emerging players. The PCB expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure a series win against South Africa, a challenging but achievable goal.
