**Bengaluru, December 10, 2024** – S.M. Krishna, a veteran Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away at his residence this morning at the age of 92. His family confirmed the news, stating that he had been ailing for some time.
Krishna, a prominent figure in Indian politics for nearly five decades, held several key positions throughout his career. He served as the 16th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004, and later as the External Affairs Minister in the Manmohan Singh government from 2009 to 2012. His political career spanned various parties, including the Congress and the BJP. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Governor of Maharashtra.
Known for his modern outlook and charismatic leadership, Krishna is credited with significantly contributing to Bengaluru’s growth as India’s “Silicon Valley” by fostering the IT sector during his time as Chief Minister. He was also a Fulbright Scholar, having studied law in the United States.
The Karnataka government has declared three days of state mourning in his honor. His cremation will take place in his village in Mandya district on December 11th with full state honors. President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi, along with numerous other leaders, have offered their condolences. Krishna is survived by his wife and two daughters.
