Mon Dec 09 18:01:45 UTC 2024: ## India Takes Delivery of Russian-Built Warship Despite Ukraine Conflict

**Moscow, Russia** – Amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, India took delivery of a new warship, INS Tushil, on Monday. The frigate, built in Russia, marks a significant achievement in defense cooperation between the three nations, demonstrating continued collaboration despite geopolitical tensions.

The INS Tushil, a Krivak III-class stealth missile frigate, is one of two ordered by India from Russia in 2016. Interestingly, the ship’s gas turbines are manufactured in Ukraine by Zorya-Mashproekt, a globally recognized leader in marine gas turbine production. This required India to procure the engines from Ukraine and have them shipped to Russia for installation, causing some delays.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who is currently in Moscow on a high-level visit, was present for the handover ceremony along with Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. The 125-meter, 3,900-tonne vessel, boasts advanced Indian missiles and a top speed exceeding 30 knots. It has undergone extensive sea trials and is now combat-ready.

The INS Tushil represents an upgraded version of the Talwar-class frigates previously delivered to India. Two more similar ships are planned for construction in India at the Goa Shipyard. This delivery is particularly noteworthy given the ongoing conflict and highlights the complex geopolitical relationships involved.

The addition of the INS Tushil strengthens India’s naval capabilities, especially in light of the expanding Chinese Navy’s presence in the Indian Ocean. While India benefits from a geographically advantageous position, the Chinese Navy’s numerical superiority remains a challenge. The INS Tushil will join the Western Fleet, bolstering India’s defenses in the region. The second warship from the 2016 order is expected to be delivered at a later date.
