**NEW DELHI** – Sanjay Malhotra, currently Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, has been appointed the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), effective December 13th. His three-year term will see him succeed Shaktikanta Das, whose tenure concludes December 10th.

Malhotra, a 1990 batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, brings a wealth of experience to the role. His career spanning over 33 years includes leadership positions in various sectors, including power, finance, taxation, information technology, and mines. He holds a degree in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur and a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University.

Before his current position, Malhotra served as Secretary in the Department of Financial Services and as Chairman and Managing Director of REC Ltd, a state-run company. His expertise in finance and taxation, both at the state and national levels, is particularly relevant. As Revenue Secretary, he played a pivotal role in formulating tax policies and overseeing robust tax collections. He also served as ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council.

Malhotra faces the immediate challenge of balancing inflation control with sustainable economic growth. His appointment comes after speculation that Shaktikanta Das, recently named the world’s top central banker by Global Finance, would receive a third term extension.
