Mon Dec 09 15:50:40 UTC 2024: ## Government to Push for “One Nation, One Election” Bill, Faces Steep Hurdles

**New Delhi** – The Indian government is poised to introduce a bill for “One Nation, One Election” in the current parliamentary session, sources have revealed. Following the Cabinet’s approval of the Ram Nath Kovind Committee’s report advocating for simultaneous elections, the government aims to build consensus before tabling the legislation. A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is likely to be formed to facilitate discussions with political parties, state assembly speakers, and other stakeholders, including the public.

However, the path to enacting this ambitious plan is fraught with challenges. Implementing “One Nation, One Election” requires amending at least six constitutional provisions, necessitating a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament. While the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds a simple majority, securing the necessary supermajority remains a significant hurdle. The NDA currently lacks the votes needed in the Rajya Sabha (upper house) and is short of the required number in the Lok Sabha (lower house) as well.

The government argues that simultaneous elections would save time, money, and resources, and alleviate the impact of the Model Code of Conduct on development projects. However, the Opposition vehemently opposes the proposal, citing logistical difficulties, concerns about its democratic nature, and claims of unconstitutionality. The Kovind Committee report itself suggests implementation not before 2029 and emphasizes the need for bipartisan support. The Opposition’s concerns and the significant vote shortfall highlight the uphill battle the government faces in enacting this landmark reform.
