**Hyderabad, December 10, 2024** – The unveiling of a new statue of Telangana Talli, a symbolic mother figure representing the state of Telangana, has sparked controversy. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inaugurated the statue at the Secretariat on Monday, hours after a government order was issued prohibiting any disrespect towards its image, criminalizing actions such as insulting, damaging, or burning it online or offline.
The new statue, designed by artist M.V. Ramana Reddy, replaces an older version. The design change has ignited debate, with differing opinions on its artistic merit and symbolic representation. While some praise the new statue’s portrayal of a simple Telangana woman, others criticize its symbolism and argue the original image was more authentic.
The original Telangana Talli statue, created in 2003 by B. Venkataramana Chari during the Telangana statehood movement, became a landmark. The newer statue’s design—depicting a woman in a green sari holding stalks of rice, corn, and millets—differs significantly from the previous iteration which featured a woman in a red sari and a golden crown. This shift has led to accusations of altering the original vision and injecting political symbolism into the sculpture.
Critics, such as Sriramoju Haragopal of Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam, argue the statue is unnecessary and its depiction inappropriate, pointing out the inclusion of corn, which only arrived in India during the 16th century. Concerns have also been raised about the open palm in the new sculpture, which some see as resembling the Congress party symbol.
The controversy highlights the complex evolution of Telangana Talli’s image, mirroring broader political and cultural divides within the state. The unveiling comes as Telangana approaches the 50th anniversary of the creation of Telugu Talli, a similar mother figure representing Telugu culture, in 1975. While originally intended to unify, the Telangana Talli statue now finds itself at the center of a heated public debate.
