**Houston, TX** – NASA is launching a competition offering a top prize of $20,000 for the best design of a system to rescue an incapacitated astronaut on the Moon’s challenging surface. This initiative, part of the larger $45,000 South Pole Safety Challenge: Lunar Rescue System, is crucial to the upcoming Artemis missions, scheduled to launch in September 2026.
The competition addresses the significant challenges posed by the Moon’s extreme temperatures, rugged terrain, and the difficulty of manually transporting a suited astronaut, even with reduced lunar gravity. The winning design must safely transport a suited astronaut uphill for at least two kilometers in the harsh conditions of the Moon’s south pole, without relying on a lunar rover.
“The harsh conditions on the Moon make it vital to have a dependable plan for getting help when needed,” said NASA’s Sarah Duglas. The agency is particularly concerned about potential accidents near the planned water-ice extraction site, where the terrain is especially treacherous.
Submissions are accepted until January 25, 2025, via the HeroX website. NASA experts will evaluate entries based on factors including weight, ease of use, and impact on the astronaut’s spacesuit. For more details, visit the official NASA website.
