**Mumbai, India (December 10, 2024)** – A speeding electric bus crashed into multiple vehicles at a busy market in Kurla, Mumbai, on Monday night, resulting in the deaths of six people and injuries to at least 43 others. The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on S.G. Barve Marg when a BEST (Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking) bus, traveling from Kurla railway station to Saki Naka, lost control and collided with an estimated 20-25 vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, motorcycles, and vans.

The victims, identified as Kannis Fatima Ansari (55), Afreen Abdul Salim Shah (19), Anam Shaikh (20), and Shivam Kashyap (18), along with two others, were pronounced dead at the scene and nearby hospitals. The injured were transported to several hospitals in the area, including Kurla Bhabha Hospital, Kohinoor Hospital, and Seven Hills Hospital.

The bus driver, Sanjay More, has been arrested and claims the brakes failed. Police are investigating whether a mechanical malfunction or driver negligence caused the accident. The three-month-old electric bus, manufactured by Olectra Greentech, was on a wet lease operated by a private contractor. A Shiv Sena MLA, Dilip Lande, stated that the driver panicked and accelerated instead of braking.

The incident has prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the safety of the city’s public transport system and the maintenance of its vehicles. The investigation will focus on the possibility of a technical fault or driver error. The accident site was immediately secured with the deployment of the Quick Response Team (QRT) and Rapid Action Force (RAF).
